Scams Iowa officials are warning about
- Government imposter scams. In March 2026, the Attorney General warned about callers pretending to be police or government officials who threaten arrest and demand payment, sometimes in gold or cash handed over in person. (Iowa AG release, March 5, 2026)
- Imposter scams in the top complaints. In February 2026, the Attorney General listed imposter scams, like fake job offers, romance scams, and IRS or Social Security calls, among the top complaints of 2025. (Iowa AG release, Feb. 19, 2026)
What to do right now
- Stop all contact. Never meet someone in person to hand over cash, gold, or other valuables.
- Call your bank or card company and ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed.
- Change passwords on any account the scammer touched, and turn on two-step login.
- Save proof: screenshots, texts, emails, call logs, receipts, and phone numbers.
- Report it to the state agency listed above, plus the FTC or IC3.
- Beware of "recovery" offers. A request for a fee to get your money back is a common warning sign of a recovery scam.
