Scams Indiana officials are warning about
- Storm and flood repair scams. In August 2026, after a derecho and flooding, the Attorney General warned about unvetted repair offers and people falsely claiming FEMA will pay for everything. (Indiana AG release, Aug. 13, 2026)
- Fake "DMV" texts. In August 2025, the Attorney General warned about texts posing as a "final notice" from a made-up Indiana "Department of Vehicles" about traffic violations. Indiana's real agency is the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. (Indiana AG release, Aug. 22, 2025)
What to do right now
- Stop all contact. Don't sign a repair contract on the spot or pay the full amount up front.
- Call your bank or card company and ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed.
- Change passwords on any account the scammer touched, and turn on two-step login.
- Save proof: screenshots, texts, emails, call logs, receipts, and phone numbers.
- Report it to the state agency listed above, plus the FTC or IC3.
- Beware of "recovery" offers. A request for a fee to get your money back is a common warning sign of a recovery scam.

Common questions
Who do I report a scam to in Indiana?
Call your bank first if money left your account. Then file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division or call 1-800-382-5516, and report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Does FEMA charge a fee to apply for storm help in Indiana?
No. The Attorney General says FEMA does not charge application fees. If someone asks you to pay to get FEMA money, it's likely a scam.
