Scams Kentucky officials are warning about
- Disaster help scams. In September 2026, Kentucky's Stop Scams program warned about people pretending to be FEMA who ask for payment or personal details, and fake contractors who demand money up front. (Kentucky Stop Scams newsletter, September 2026)
- Tech support scams. In the same September 2026 newsletter, the state warned about fake messages saying your computer or phone has a virus, from criminals pretending to be tech companies. (Kentucky Stop Scams newsletter, September 2026)
What to do right now
- Stop all contact. If a pop-up or caller says your computer has a virus, hang up or close it. Don't let them into your device.
- Call your bank or card company and ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed.
- Change passwords on any account the scammer touched, and turn on two-step login.
- Save proof: screenshots, texts, emails, call logs, receipts, and phone numbers.
- Report it to the state agency listed above, plus the FTC or IC3.
- Beware of "recovery" offers. A request for a fee to get your money back is a common warning sign of a recovery scam.
