Scams Michigan officials are warning about
- Bank and credit union imposters. In August 2026, the Attorney General warned about callers who fake a bank's caller ID, claim a problem with your account, and ask for your login or personal details. (Michigan AG release, Aug. 12, 2026)
- Gift card scams. In April 2026, the Attorney General warned about fake police, utilities, tech support, and "family emergency" callers who ask for payment by gift card. (Michigan AG release, April 21, 2026)
What to do right now
- Stop all contact. If someone says there's a problem with your bank account, hang up and call the number on your card.
- Call your bank or card company and ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed.
- Change passwords on any account the scammer touched, and turn on two-step login.
- Save proof: screenshots, texts, emails, call logs, receipts, and phone numbers.
- Report it to the state agency listed above, plus the FTC or IC3.
- Beware of "recovery" offers. A request for a fee to get your money back is a common warning sign of a recovery scam.

Common questions
Who do I report a scam to in Michigan?
Call your bank first if money left your account. Then call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Team at 517-335-7599 or toll-free 877-765-8388, and report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Will a Michigan government agency ask me to pay with a gift card?
No. The Michigan Attorney General says no real business or government agency will demand payment by gift card. If they do, it's a scam.
